About Fatty
Hi. My name’s Elden, but please feel free to call me “Fatty.”
How it Started
For the past fifteen or so years, biking — whether on the road or on dirt — has has been essentially my one and only hobby/activity/obsession. The thing is, though, cyclists need to be light if they’re going to be fast. So, a few years ago, when I went on a nice long bike ride and noticed I was having to walk up hills I had easily ridden not many years before, I realized something had to be done.
And yes, I also noticed my knees pushed into my gut with each pedal stroke. Shaddup.
I had known I needed to lose weight, but hadn’t really done much about it. As I pushed my bike up the road, I realized I had not tried one very successful diet tactic: humiliation. I resolved to start a blog, embarrassing myself by proclaiming my weight on a daily basis, no matter how bad I was doing.
I didn’t want to just post my weight, though. So I also wrote stories. Sometimes these stories are about rides. Sometimes they’re fake news (especially around Tour de France time, when there’s usually lots of stuff in the bike industry that begs for satire). Sometimes they’re about whatever bike-related thing has popped into my head that morning (lunchtime, evening, whenever).
And lately the blog’s been about a little bit more.
What’s Going On Right Now
Besides being a middle-aged guy who loves cycling, I’m also the father of four kids (2 boys, identical twin girls). Until August 2009, I was also the husband of a woman — Susan — who passed away after a five-year fight with breast cancer.
So while I still write lots of the jokey stuff I always have, I’m now inclined to also write the occasional serious post, keeping my family and friends (including the hundreds of friends I’ve made on this blog, but have never met in person) up to date with how how I’m doing.
I also am prone to frequent contests for my readers, geared toward making money for the Lance Armstrong Foundation and the Huntsman Cancer Institute, two organizations that have helped us in immeasurably in our fight against cancer.
How to Reach Me
It’s easy to reach me. Just send me email. You should know that there’s a reasonable chance I won’t respond, because, well, I have four kids, a full-time job, a blog, a love of bicycles, and a short attention span. So follow these guidelines:
- Ask one question when you email me, and keep it simple. If you ask a whole bunch of questions or a question that requires hours of work from me, I’ll think to myself, “I’ll have to get back to this one later,” and then I never will. This isn’t me being snobby about email with strangers; this is how I am with everyone, including friends, family, and my boss.
- If I don’t reply, try emailing me again. I’m probably not ignoring you on purpose. I’m just not very organized or responsible.
If You Want to Reprint Something I’ve Written
Once in a while, people ask me if they can reprint something I’ve written. If you find yourself in this situation, please seek help. It’s not too late to get the attention you need. Or you can just email me and ask. Generally I’m cool with it, as long as you give me credit. If you can give me extra credit, so much the better.
Wrapping Up
As of this moment, I am twenty pounds heavier than I was when the pictures you see here were taken. Once again, I can accurately call myself “Fatty.”
How nice for me.

I am so glad I found your site. I am a hair under six foot but a true clyde at an out of shape 270lbs. Years ago I was riding at 225lbs regularly (before kids, career and laziness). Some of us just can’t be 180lbs or smaller and sites like these show we can do the same things other riders can. Thank you for this site and the best to you and all the other Clydes in 08′.

FC,
just found the blog, instantly bookmarked you.
i too am a fatty. i started cycling a year ago and have lost 35lbs. of course, i’m still weighing in at 260lb, but at least i’m going in the right direction. kinda ticked that i missed out on the jerseys, but the xxxl pry wouldnt have fit my fat arse anyway. but the pink color would have been a perfect tribute to my mother-in-law who is celebrating her 10th anniversary of breast cancer survival.
keep the faith!

You don’t know me, and I don’t know you beyond your writings. Many people share similar things, though, and I’m just writing to encourage you that you’re not alone in all you’re going through. And I think you’re on a good path. Bad stuff happens that we can’t change, but we can approach it all with as much dignity as we can muster. When we can’t muster any dignity, the best we may be able to do is to know that we did our best. Keep doing your best, whatever that may be, and whatever the outcome. There may be lots of sadness, but I’ll hope there are fewer regrets.
Prayers and Blessings to you, Susan and your family.

Comment by Tinker | 11.25.2008 | 11:49 am
JUst found your blog a few days ago, and your “fatness’ is an embarassment to all (us) fat cyclists. I have just purchased a rather neat malayasian-made Raliegh 3 speed. Hope to lose about (mumble) pounds, I weigh about 325, so all you pikers that complain about weighing 225, 275, those are places I am still struggling to get to, and you get no sympathy from me.
Oh. The cancer thing. Hard cheese, man. You have my sympathy for that, at least. My mother and my wife’s mother both had “encounters” with breast cancer, years back, the doctor who said my mother was going to die in 6 months or less, died years before my mother did, my wife’s mother eventually succumbed to cancer. It would be stupid for me to tell you anything about making it through this, since you know more about how things affect you and your wife, here and now. I will note that the chances of surviving cancer now are far better than my mother’s chances 30 years ago, but you knew that already.
Damn. Just… Damn. Words fail me. Since I had a stroke a few years ago, I find myself more emotional now than before, but even allowing for that, I am ill-equipped to deal with this, while you seem to be handling it rather well. I’d offer assistance but it would not be all that convenient a thousand mile away, to do anything substantive. But if there is anything I can do from Austin, TX to help, just ask. No, really. Just ask.

Elden and Susan …
Love your family photo! (Which one of your talented sisters took it.) You all look wonderful! … well, except I have to get used to not seeing any hair on Elden’s head. (At Thanksgiving, we took a “family photo” and out of my 3 sons and two sons-in-laws, 3 of the 5 had that stuff growing from their chin, too. It must be “cool”!) :-))
As always, you are all in our thoughts and prayers … especially Susan. What a positive, beautiful example she is to all of us … with our “little problems”. It makes me, and my family, sad to know how hard it must be for you and your family, with all the emotions, pain, and sadness you are going through. Thanks Elden, for sharing your life with us and helping many find “smiles” in the hardest of times.
Our love forever …

Please tell Susan that you have brought “tons” of folks into your/her life who are now thinking of her and hoping like Hell that she will win her fight! While I know it is not the intent of your writings, you have made many of those “healthy” tons of people realize just how lucky they are when they look at themselves from a different angle.

Elden, er ‘Fatty’ -
You seem like an open book kinda guy. That’s very rare and awesome.
I just happened to learn how to look at people’s Twitter accounts when I saw Lance Armstrong’s post about your family. Long story short, I’ve been sitting here after our kids have gone to bed…reading your family’s story, your passion for cycling and your intimate battle with Susan’s cancer. I didn’t plan on reading all this tonight, but you have an amazing sense of calm and positivity – things that I truly value as well.
Just wanted you to know that a fellow father is sending prayer your way – for peace and strength. I just happen to LOVE cycling too…and maybe you can inspire me to find ways to get out on my old Bontrager again soon for a spin around Northern California :-)
Take care

My thoughts go out to you and your family. I will share with you something I wrote last year.
I look down at the yellow rubber bracelet as I type. What it meant to me when I first started to wear it has changed through the years. Initially, it was for a cyclist, a cause, a survivor that had inspired me.
It has sense become a symbol for fighters; of people I knew battling cancer. Some of them I will continue to see, but sadly there are those that I will never talk to again. All of them have a part of my conscious as I wake each day. It may have been the calmness which they faced uncertainty, or a fond memory of a time that we shared.
Cancer is indiscriminant. It finds a way into our lives at some point, and until there is a cure, an unwelcome guest and inconvenience. It encourages me to be as humble as I can. Thankful for the family and friends that I have, the water I drink, the food that I eat.
If I have learned anything, it is that I must acknowledge any small nugget of shine that comes my way. A smile, a chance conversation, an opportunity to give back, a sunset I may have overlooked. To strive to see the world with the curiosity of a child.

I’ve come to your site by chance… which I don’t believe in.
God bless you and your children during this difficult transition. You, and they, know she lives still and that you’ll be together again. What a wonderful promise!
When you are ready to begin moving forward again let me know how I can extend your fundraising network to the Tampa, FL area.

I came to his site because a Seattle cyclist was wearing a teeshirt with this website on it. I thought I should check out this website..
I was very moved by your writing about your wife. Losing a spouse is not for the weak-I’ve been there.
MY you have the strength to live strong. The one thing I learned is that the public funeral is just the surface part of the deeper “decoupling” that will take place.
Peace to you and your family.

Nelson – Read the article about you and your family, very touching story, it was very timely, as my wife as just recently been diagnosed with breast cancer, undergone her 1st session of chemo and this week has lost all of her hair. How do I become a member of the Fat Cyclist Team?

It’s funny how these things snowball. Hopefully…if you have someone helping monitor this, you can contact us. We are holding a stage race the last weekend in February. We are also in a dilemma of what to do with the proceeds of an “auction bike”. It’s an Italian Wilier Tri-Crono TT bike. We want to split it amongst a National and Local cause.
It’s great to try and be part of something bigger than ourselves. Some go through things on earth. Their own handling of that journey has the ability to inspire. You and yours, case in point.

Hey Fatty, I hestitate to write after hearing about all you’ve been through. And I know you were already a super busy guy. I have a cycling blog I write everyday (for 9 months now) and I’m impressed with the layout, technology and advertising integration you’ve got. I’d love to buy you lunch or a few rounds sometime — maybe after the holidays — and pick your brain and get some advice. I’m right down the road in Fairfax. It would be a huge help. Any chance we might pull that off sometime? Matt

As I believe you are a great father, a great man, with a heart bigger than most can think of having. I pray for your continued success as well as your children. john

Fatty – saw your jersey on the MS DeKalb ride today and was eager to get home and logon and see what it’s all about. I’ve already read so many blog entries. My 17 year old has been undergoing treatment (off and on) for a brain tumor for more than ten years. She’s stable for now. So much of what I’ve read here already has hit home. Especially as a fellow fatty cyclist. Looking forward to more.

Fatty – Looking forward to meeting you in Seattle. I’ve been meaning to join Team Fatty since seeing your video last year at the Fundraising Appreciation Dinner in Seattle, but have just barely gotten around to it. Better late than never, right? I’ve read the blog a little in the past, spent most my life in Utah County, and also have a passion for defeating cancer. Keep up the good work and hopefully we’ll see you Saturday night in Seattle.

Cancer is such an ugly disease. I’m happy to be doing my part (albeit “small”) in supporting the cure by competing with the Tour de Donut.
Love your blog!

Last week or more now we had the opportunity to be at the Tour and rode up the Col du Madeleine. We saw ol’ Smiley, a bit of a crusty fellow stopping at every camper van and telling everyone to go to fatcyclist.com and about your mission. We were told to tell you we saw him riding up ;) He was effective–as he was definitely a memorable character. I also heard an NPR story tonight saying that Lance twittered you. This is a pretty cool thing you’ve got going here. Good work and keep it up. Best to you and yours. Sarah – Tacoma, WA

…just read your page and short bio…nice to meet you Elden. You seem to share a true passion for what you write..impressive. I felt a kinship especially when you mentioned “knees hitting your gut…me too. Been riding for about three years here in Texas. Participated in some rides along with the MS150 and have to say…cycling is the best way to meet people and size yourself up in the process. I to have yet to actually try and stick to any kind of diet or healthy trend…need to..could but still enjoy food, beer and all things god given.. see you out there dude. Doug

found your site from Ben’s site……Anybody that can hold their high and move on with life when thrown a curve ball, I admire. As a cyclist myself, I see cycling as purely another way to find the inner child in ones self. My wife is a survivor, and everyday I tell myself that this is still all a dream, that never happened to us…..God bless…. I ride everyday to take my mind off everything life related…even if it is now on the trainer except for cross season that is about to end….”At least your enjoying the ride”……Hell in a Bucket – Grateful Dead

Elden, I know that after reading several of these blogs that the 2nd year is coming up in a few weeks when Susan passed away. My face is wet with tears after reading these endearing words from people you don’t even know! How precious they are and good for my soul too. I’m a survivor of 2.5 years of Advanced Stage 3 Breast Cancer. I have some days that are better than others and how fortunate to have a team of supporters for you and your family! I’m now a fan! I will cheer you on in your endeavors. My husband couldn’t handle my cancer and asked me to leave the home. I’m struggling and it’s nice to know there are so many people that really care. Fatty,
I just started reading your blog a few days ago. As a fairly new cyclist I’ve found your posts pretty inspiring. At 5′8″ and 175lbs, I need all the inspiration I can get! I just finished my first Gran Fondo last weekend in Palo Alto, CA and I’m seriously considering doing Levi’s Gran Fondo in Napa next weekend. If not, I may just have to book a cycling trip to France or Italy after seeing some of the pics of your trip! Good luck and keep up the great work!
